We’ve all had to grapple with being apart from friends and family these days. It’s become a universal experience in the times of covid-19.
But for some, this pandemic has been even harder. The ones that I’m referring to are those who are in long distance relationships.
Being in a long distance relationship is never an easy thing for a couple. Your schedule probably never matches up, making it difficult to connect. Depending on just how long of a distance it is, you may have to get up early or stay up late just to make a phone call possible.
Even when you can talk on the phone or by text, it’s just not the same as being with your person. You may miss the tone of your partner, leading to misunderstandings and even fights which can strain your relationship.
And in addition to all of the normal stresses of a long distance relationship, the travel restrictions forced by the pandemic may make meeting up with your partner impossible even if you would like to.
If you’re currently in a long distance relationship, you likely don’t need me to be telling you any of this as you probably are already well aware of it.
One thing that you can do for your long distance partner during this time is to give them a meaningful gift. I’m not talking about getting them some new socks or a Starbucks gift card, but something that comes from the heart and shows them how much you care.
So I’ve decided to share a few tips to keep in mind when brainstorming long distance gift ideas that will help to strengthen your relationship.
Recall Happy Memories
The first tip is to somehow call back to any happy memories that you and your partner have from your relationship.
Was there a great vacation that the two of you took together back when, you know, vacations were a thing? Do something that triggers these happy memories.
If you had a great time at a beach you could send your partner seashells in the mail one week, and then a starfish and sand dollars the next. Include photos and handwritten notes about your fond memories with them with the packages.
Use Inside Jokes
You can also make references to inside jokes from your relationship. Maybe the two of you share the same disdain for a certain TV show. You can send them a t-shirt or coffee mug of the show.
Sure it seems silly, but it will remind them of the laughs that you have shared together about it, and that’s what really matters.
Think of their Hobbies and Interests
What does your partner spend their free time doing when you are at home together? Sending them something to aid in their hobby will show them that you’re thinking of them.
It could be something easy. Maybe they’re into puzzles! Well, get them a puzzle. Maybe they’re super interested in underwater basket weaving. Well, actually I’m not sure what to get them in that case, but you’ll think of something.
Doing this will let them know that you’re thinking of them, and also help them pass those long quarantine hours that they’re at home.
